The CTG Marine Deck Unit interfaces between the computer and the instruments. It supplies the power to the instrument suite and converts the RS422 output from the instruments to the RS232 format required by the PC. The CTG Marine Deck Unit case may be rack mounted or stand alone by removing the mounting lugs. The case is not spray proof so it must be sited within a deck house environment. Having
a 72 VDC output it is specifically designed with sufficient voltage
overhead to operate on most multi-core oceanographic cables up to 1000
metres long when providing 1A to the sub-sea instrumentation. The
CTG Marine Deck Unit is typically used in real time deployments of
towed vehicle based systems, ie, Nn-Shuttle
and AQUAshuttle
III and profiling packages. However it can also be used in the
laboratory during sensor calibrations etc. The appropriate
interface unit to instrument cable is required. |

The Portable Interface Unit converts the RS422 communications protocol of the subsea instruments (required to enable communications over long cables) to RS232 for interfacing to a host PC running AQUAsoft. Having a low voltage output (16VDC) the PIU is not designed to withstand large voltage drops experienced when deploying instruments on long cables. It is used with short cable lengths (typically 3m). A mains powered adapter (110-240 VAC) allows recharging of the internal battery whilst simultaneously powering the instrument. The appropriate interface unit to instrument cable is required. This unit is not designed to provide power during deployment. |
